Career in Oil and Gas Panel

AIPN and the Career Development Office will present a panel on careers in oil and gas.

Jim Barnes-- Partner, Barnes & Cascio LLP
Mr. Barnes has more than 25 years of experience advising companies on international upstream and midstream oil and gas acquisitions, divestitures, operations, financing and related transactions, and has worked in more than 30 countries. Holds a bachelors degree in mathematics from the University of Vermont, a masters degree in agricultural and resource economics from the University of Maine, a juris doctorate degree from the University of Florida, a diploma in international law from Trinity College, Cambridge, England and the Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, Poland, and has attended the International Executive Program at the Institute for Management Development in Laussane, Switzerland.

Jose L. Valera—Partner, Mayer Brown LLP
Jose L. Valera is a partner in the Houston office of Mayer Brown and co-head of the firm’s oil and gas practice. He focuses his practice on domestic and international energy transactions and project development, with more than 25 years of legal experience representing oil, gas and electric energy companies throughout the United States, Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. He represents oil and gas companies on exploration and production contracts, investment agreements, upstream development projects, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures.

Anthony F. Newton--Partner, K&L Gates LLP
Mr. Newton is a partner in the firm’s Houston office and focuses his practice on energy and infrastructure projects and transactions, primarily general corporate, mergers and acquisitions, finance and private equity for privately-held, middle-market, oilfield service companies. Prior to joining K&L Gates, Mr. Newton was a partner in the energy practice group of a big Houston law firm. He practiced in the areas of general corporate, mergers and acquisitions, finance, and taxation.

Robert Denzer-- Independent Landman
Registered Landman with the American Association of Professional Landmen, and certified Petroleum Land Management representative. As a landman, he researches title, negotiates leases with potential lessors, compiles drilling runsheets, and performs curative on oil and gas drilling opinions.  Mr. Denzer runs his own LLC as a sub-contractor of a brokerage. He’s also a part-time J.D. student at the University of Houston Law Center.
